Note: If you are one of the approximate 40% of lawyers that suffer from substance addiction, clinical depression, and/or traumatic anxiety, practicing law is like trying to run with a pebble in your shoe.
If you have any of these conditions, in addition to getting coaching, you may wish to get medical/psychological assistance to get the pebble out of your shoe.
David Ibbetson
- I practised law for a total of over 45 years.
- During my legal career I self coached, learning much about maintaining my own personal wellness and managing my legal practice.
- I also learned a lot through trial and error.
- I hired my own personal coach for a period of time, and she was very helpful to me.
- I have taken formal coaching training and take ongoing training, so that I can now help legal professionals thrive, in their personal lives and in the practice of law.

Some Good Advice from Mother Theresa
“People are often unreasonable and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are honest, people may cheat you. Be honest anyway. If you find happiness, people maybe jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today maybe forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway. For you see, in the end, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.”
Some Further Advice from Brené Brown
“When we fail to set boundaries and hold people accountable, we feel used and mistreated”
An Astute Observation from Steve Jobs
“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.”
The Self-Coaching Process
- I suggest you review my coaching templates (see above) and intuitively jot down areas that you feel might need attention in your life.
- Then review the following “smorgasbord” of resources (listed below) regarding personal wellness and practice management.
- Just like a food smorgasbord you will not be able to “eat” all of them.
- I suggest you look at the list regularly from time to time and follow your intuition as to which ones to visit and the extent that you review the content.
- Make a plan for yourself regarding changes you wish to make in your life and work the plan.
- If you need help working your plan, please contact me
Testimonials
“David has been helping me with a mid-career transition. I have found him to be easy to talk to and a very knowledgeable sounding board. He seems to understand and recognize what I’m trying to achieve. He has helped me to identify my natural strengths and utilize them. He has been very helpful to me in this challenging endeavour and has assisted me in making a plan going forward.”
― Dominic
“Excellent. Wonderful. Outstanding. I cannot say enough about how magnificent David has been. He is, by far, the best in the business. He is wise, empathetic, insightful and has not only helped change how I approach my practice, but he has also helped me change the way I think. He is extremely knowledgeable, sharp, effective, and caring. He has a wealth of experience and knowledge that any lawyer at any stage of their career would benefit from. As a junior lawyer, he has guided me (and continues to guide me) through my practice and challenges I have faced so far. I very much appreciate his deep knowledge and sincere integrity, and I cannot say enough about how thankful and lucky I am to have David in my corner.”
― Sarah
“I reached out to David after 34 years of practice for coaching to guide me in a shift in my practice, and to improve the way I manage my law practice. In addition to providing me with excellent resources, I have drawn upon his own wealth of experience. He exudes a contagious enthusiasm. I used to think young lawyers used coaches, but he has proven to me his value as a coach at any stage of a lawyer’s career.”
― Stan
